Snow Plowing and Removal Techniques
Snow plowing is a hassle dealt with every winter. It can cause a lot of headaches when trying to remove from the streets, sidewalks and driveways. Most people remove snow from their sidewalks with a snow shovel or blower and a plow for larger areas, as driveways and roads. There are a few ways of plowing snow that will make less hassle.
Snow Blade Techniques
Angle the plowing blade to either the left or right side of the vehicle. Angling the blade will throw the snow to one side, making a windrow. This technique works well for wide open areas such as parking lots.
Straighten the blade to push the windrows and back dragging. Back dragging is very useful when removing snow from the edges of building. Raise the blade above the snow and drive forward. Then lower the blade to the ground and drive backwards a few vehicle lengths. This will allow you to turn the snow plow around and push the snow where you want.
Snow Shovel Techniques
Shovel small chunks of snow and ice to avoid injury or fatigue. Shoveling larger chunks of snow and ice will add stress to your back and arms. Shovel using short, choppy strokes. The longer strokes will only add time and pain. Break large chunks of ice into smaller chunks with your shovel's blade or handle. Use a hammer or other large object if your shovel isn't heavy enough. Shovel the snow as soon as you can after it stopped falling.
Snow Blowing Techniques
Remove snow in smaller chunks to help avoid clogging in the blower. You'll only waste more time unclogging your blower if you try removing large chunks.
