Types of Advertising Banners
Online advertising is a popular strategy used by companies to market their products. Most forms of online advertising involve a banner advertisement, which is a common rectangular advertisement that usually contains information describing a product, and they usually direct the viewer to a different website when they are clicked on.
There are many different banner advertisements used by hundreds of companies on an even larger number of websites. Banners are limited in their size by the International Advertising Bureau and the ads employ a variety of different functions and features meant to attract attention.
Sizes
All advertising banners are rectangularly shaped and are limited to the following sizes:
- 486 x 60 Pixels (Full Banner)
- 392 x 72 Pixels (Full Banner with a navigation bar)
- 125 x 125 Pixels (Square Button)
- 120 x 90 Pixels (Button One)
- 120 x 60 Pixels (Button Two)
- 88 x 31Pixels (Micro-button)

- 120 x 240 Pixels (Vertical Banner)
Functions
Advertising banners have been implemented with several different features that are used to attract the attention of viewers and to entice the viewer to follow a link. Some of the common attention-grabbers used by advertisers and web developers include bright flashes or changes in color, pop-up advertising banners, pop-under advertisements, and other graphic functions. Many advertisers choose to use a combination of different banners to accomplish their goals. A popular strategy is to display subtle advertisements on a website, and then use pop-up or pop-under advertisements to offer deals to viewers who attempt to leave the website without making a purchase.
