Types of Hitches and Towing Accessories for Trucks
You are ready to upgrade your truck and add a few accessories. You’d like to get a hitch or some sort of towing accessory. There are many on the market today. Here is a quick glance at a few of the hundreds of hitches and towing accessories available for purchase on the market today.
Class I, II, III, IV, V Hitches
This is the unit that attaches under your truck. The different classes correlate to the different towing capacities. The higher the class, the more it can tow. It is important to get a class that fits your truck. It is useless to purchase a Class V hitch for an SUV. The SUV does not have the power to tow anything that would be considered a Class V.
One Inch or Two Inch Receivers
Receivers connect the hitch to the ball. Receivers can have one ball or a variety of all three. Some models offer a receiver step to allow for easy access to the towing vehicles. You can also purchase receiver hitch locks to keep your receiver from being stolen.
Hitch Balls
Hitch balls connect to the receiver to the item you are towing. Hitch balls come in three sizes: 1 7/8 inches, 2 inches, and 2 5/16 inches.
Fifth Wheel
A fifth wheel is a mount that sits higher in the bed of a truck, above the axial. This hook up is similar to an 18 wheeler hook up and used for recreational purposes.
Gooseneck
This is when the attachment is located inside the bed of the truck, above the axial. This provides more towing capacity and strength. The gooseneck attachment is usually used for commercial purposes.
Wireless Towing Lights
This is a great product that helps eliminate twisted, cut or broken wires. Wireless towing lights are easy to install and maintenance free.
