USB Data Cable Instructions

USB cables are used to connect computers to televisions, game consoles, mp3 players or other computers. The cables come in a variety of lengths and can be purchased from many department and electronic stores. Almost all electronic devices have a USB port.

  1. Use a tape measure to determine the distance between the two devices you would like to connect. This will tell you how long the USB cord should be. Purchase a cord that is long enough or a little bit longer.

  2. Look on the back or side of each device to find the USB ports. These ports look like small, flat openings and should be located near other ports and plugins on the devices.

  3. Plug the USB into the port of the first device. Route the excess cord around or behind stands and desks as you bring the other end of the USB cord to the other device. Plug it into the device.

  4. Turn on your devices. If you are connecting a computer to another device, the computer will need to recognize and install the device drivers. A popup window will prompt you to install it. It may take several minutes for the computer to finish downloading the device drivers. Do no attempt to use the device while the drivers are being downloaded.

  5. If the device has a software CD, insert it into the computer and download any necessary programs required to operate the device. Many devices can also be charged by connecting them to a computer with a USB cord.
