What is Pink Eye?

Conjunctivitis is commonly referred to as "pink eye". People can suffer from this condition if they have an infection or an allergic reaction. It can happen to people of any age, but is more common children. Pink eye is not dangerous to your vision.

A viral infection is the leading cause of a person developing pink eye. The membranes react to bacteria and cause the eye to become red and inflamed. The reaction can be a result of chemical irritants such as smoke or air pollution. It usually begins in one eye, but eventually will spread to both eyes.

The symptoms of viral pink eye are watery discharge, sinus congestion and runny nose. Looking at bright lights may be painful and the eyelids may be swollen. This type of pink eye is very contagious. Symptoms of bacterial pink eye include eye pain, swelling, redness, and a yellow or greenish discharge from the eyes.

The duration of the infection is approximately 7 to 10 days. Anyone that is suffering from pink eye should see his or her physician to determine if an antibiotic treatment is necessary.
