Storage Wars Post 2, Storage Auctions on "Castle"

Network television can not resist the excitement of storage auctions, as the latest episode of "Castle" featured a storage auction, a murder mystery, and a layered exploration relationships people have with their stuff.      As people become more enamored with storage auctions, it seems the subject is going mainstream. Storage has entered a new phase of collective consciousness. Major entertainment production companies are exploring both the attraction and thrill of acquiring other people's possessions through the exhilaration of the competitive bidding process of auctions. Major networks are showcasing this subject during prime time!  What was once a largely overlooked fact of life is now a hot topic.     The most recent episode of "Castle" featured the main character Rick Castle purchasing a storage unit at auction to aid in a murder investigation.    The episode explored not just the possessions of the mysterious and unknown former tenant, but explored relationships people have with stuff and possessions, and what role they can play in our lives, from nostalgic- as they remind us of significant events and milestones in our lives, to the borderline hoarder.  The power of a doll to take the no nonsense police Captain Victoria Gates, who could be described as openly hostile to the main character Rick Castle, and show a human and grateful side is not to be under rated.   It speaks to the powerful emotional triggers of a toy from a childhood, or that rare find that a collector dreams about for years.     Rick Castle's partner Detective Beckett discusses saving items throughout her life, and underscores the importance items can have in our life, and the journey it takes.    Castle's daughter struggles with the monumental life change of moving away from home, and living in a college dorm.   She finds comfort in her things, and makes an effort to bring most if not all of her possessions with her in an attempt to mitigate the emotional upheaval of her life change.   The possessions are a tangible comfort, and a constant in a changing environment.     Of note is Rick Castle's primary competitor in the storage auction who drives up the auction price, and it is later discovered that he struggles with his relationship with possessions as he buys items to resell, but is unable to do so, and  instead catalogs them and his packed apartment could become a hoarder's shrine to all sorts of items.  He seemingly represents the danger of having an unhealthy relationship with possessions, and suffers for it in his quality of life.      The relationships we have with stuff is powerful, and possessions play an important, even a vital role in our lives.   From the essential items we need to live, to the nostalgic items of our lives lived, or that treasure, heirloom we might acquire our lives can be enriched with possessions.       For us, a great storage manager and facility understands these elements. Storing other people's possessions is a great responsibility and requires trust.    From day one, we spent time to understand and design solutions to help people with their overall  storage needs.   It is not coincidental that we coined the catchphrase "Store Your Stuff!" s.m. from early in our inception.    We were exploring not just the physical elements required in storage, but the roles stuff plays in our lives.  People's relationship with their stuff is real, its raw and its powerful.   It is important for the storage facility to be cognizant of the many varied and important roles stuff plays in peoples lives and never treat that lightly.    Rest assured,  we at Green Gables take that very seriously.  Now that people's relationship to stuff has gained national attention on shows like "Storage Wars" and "Castle" it is an opportunity for people to review their relationships with their items.   Perhaps they are inspired to join the "Storage Wars" craze and bid on a storage unit.   For others, it may be a time to start organizing the memories that are piling up through the years.  Others yet may wish to downsize.   Whatever your relationship with "Stuff" we hope it is a positive and uplifting one.

Storage Wars! Its what everybody wants to talk about

Storage Wars has set the public's  imagination ablaze with the popular reality show's tales of storage hijinks and the possibility of treasures waiting to be claimed by the highest bidder.    Only a short while ago storage auctions were poorly attended, and received a collective yawn from the general public. No more!   It is often one of the first questions we receive, and even small children's eyes light up with the understanding that a storage facility is where auctions can happen. No doubt, it is a fascinating show that profiles several professionals and their attempts to find and bid on just the right storage unit, in the hopes of making a profit. People genuinely get excited by the prospect of new episodes, and the idea that that next big treasure is right around the corner.   The producers of the show have developed a compelling format of storytelling showing the highs and lows of buying storage units, and trying to figure out what you have, and how to turn that into cash- all with a somewhat friendly competition between the regulars on the show. People want to talk about the show, and they want to talk about storage auctions in the area.    We at Green Gables Storage enjoy the show just like everyone else.   But for the Storage Facility owner, it is never a happy or exciting moment. It means something went very wrong in the rental process, and it could not be resolved.   We serve the communities of Leicester, Cuylerville, Perry, Mt. Morris, Geneseo, Silver Lake, York, the entire Genesee Valley, and beyond. We take that seriously, and we really enjoy being able to help people out with their storage needs.    We also like it when people leave with their possessions, and each side is happy.   That is a win-win.   People want to know about auctions, and if it is like Storage Wars.   The first thing people have to remember, is that the show usually shows Los Angles, Las Vegas and high density metropolitan  areas.   So there are inherent differences in each location, and there are differences here.   Also, from our perspective, we much prefer to prevent the person's possessions from going to sale, if at all possible.    As for Storage Wars, it makes great television.   Following the efforts of people who do this on a regular basis makes for great t.v..   It has even made for some great conversations in storage and about the local community.   Thanks for all of the interest and inquiries, and if you bump into us, sure we are happy to answer your questions about storage, storage wars, storage auctions

Autumn in the Genesee Valley- Perfect!

The crisp weather coupled with the end of September tells me it is really Fall.   It is a great time of the year, and the trees seem to give the promise of spectacular colors.   They are just beginning to turn, but in a few weeks the Genesee Valley will be ablaze in yellows, reds, browns!     Whether it is the treat of watching the fog slowly relinquish its hold on the valley, revealing the stunning colors, or the crispness of the morning that invigorates your circulation, or that first puff of condensed breath in front of your face, Autumn in the Genesee Valley is not to missed, or wasted.     It is a great time of the year for so many reasons, and I hope everyone gets a chance to do some of the traditional activities.    This area is absolutely one of the best to view Fall Foliage, or  take in one of the great local festivals such as Appleumpkin, or at enjoy some apple cider with friends and family.    We really feel this is one of the very best places to be for Fall in the entire nation- it is just so beautiful this time of year.   We hope everyone has a great Fall season!
