Most professional towing companies subscribe to an online service that provides vehicle/ vessel ownership (as well as lienholder and insurance) information. If this is the case, you will need to prove that you are the owner by presenting a valid, government issued, photo ID.

If the legal owner of the vehicle is not capable of showing up to claim it, then a signed and notarized form may be required that releases the tow company from liability and permits you to claim and operate the vehicle on thier behalf.

If ownership of the vehicle/ vessel can not be verified because the system is down or no record is on file, you will need to bring the title or registration showing that you are the vehicle/ vessel owner. The registration must be current and assigned to that vehicle. Therefore, if the tag is expired - take care of this before visiting the tow company.

It is a good idea to also bring with you a current insurance card for the vehicle or vessel you are claiming. We do not release uninsured vehicles for operation due to liability reasons. If a vehicle is not properly insured, it must be towed from our yard by any company chosen by the vehicle owner or his/her representative named on the legal form.

Of course, private companies can set policies as they see fit to protect themselves by limiting liability. It is always best to call the company in advance to establish what documents they require for your situation.

    Hope this helps.

It may vary by state. In Washington State, a valid photo identification with the same name as the registered owner is all that is required. The towing company should be able to obtain registered owner information from the department of licensing.
