Best Ways to Prevent Drafts from a Fireplace
Most of the newer homes on the market today offer fireplaces. Many people will not even consider purchasing a home that does not have a fireplace. A fireplace is a great asset for a home to have, but it is very important that drafts be prevented when the fireplace is not in use.
These are the best steps to prevent drafts from a fireplace.
A chimney pillow or a chimney balloon can be installed in the chimney to prevent the air from entering the house. These can both be purchased at any home and garden supply store. The size of the pillow or balloon that is needed can be determined by measuring the inside of the chimney flue. The flue is located just above the damper.
Insulation should be installed in all of the wall cavities of the fireplace that is exposed to the outdoors.
The damper should be kept closed when the fireplace is not in use.
The opening of the fireplace can be blocked using boards. This method may be unsightly, but it will stop the draft from entering the home.
A temporary seal cap can be installed on the top of the chimney.
