Tips on Leather Restoration

DIY Leather Restoration

Over time, leather can become dull and lose its luster. Age, wear and tear can also take a toll on leather. Leather restoration can bring back that new look and make your leather glossy again. You can restore your leather at home avoiding the cost of a professional.

Items Needed

  • one cup mink oil

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar

  • mixing bowl

  • two strips chamois

  1. Combine one cup mink oil with 1/2 cup white vinegar in a medium size mixing bowl. Stir gently to mix them together. The white vinegar acts as your cleaning agent and removes any grime or build up on your leather. The mink oil acts as a leather conditioner that will bring back the glossy look to your leather. They work best mixed together.

  2. Dip one chamois into the mink oil and white vinegar mix. Gently squeeze out any excess liquid from your chamois. You do not want it to be dripping wet, just damp.

  3. Start restoring your leather by working on small sections at a time. A 12-inch-by-12-inch area is all you need to work on before moving to the next area.

  4. Rub your damp chamois gently on your leather. Rub your chamois in small circular motions. Continue to rub in the area you are working on for about three minutes. Then move on to the next area. This allows the oil to penetrate the leather and restore any damaged areas.

  5. Continue to dip your chamois as it dries out into the oil and vinegar solution. Remember to squeeze out the chamois before rubbing the leather with it. Do this until all your leather has been wiped down.

  6. Buff the leather with another clean dry chamois. This will absorb any excess oil from the leather and help to restore your leather's luster.
