How to Adjust a Fireplace Flue
A fireplace in a home can be a welcome, cozy way to heat a room or two. The problem comes in when the flue is not adjusted to the proper placement and lets all the heat leak out into the atmosphere. Adjusting the flue properly can help heat the house while still letting out the smoke.
- Look for the chain or handle the opens and closes the damper or the flue. Do not light the fire until this step has been completed. Use the lever, if there is one, to move the damper up and down. After it has moved look up into the chimney. If up and down does not work, try side to side. Not all fireplaces are the same. If your chimney has chains and not a lever, then try pulling one then the other to find out which opens and closes the damper.
- Make a fire with the flue fully open. Once the fire is a good size, try adjusting the flue to the appropriate sized opening. When putting your hands into the fireplace, use something to protect your hands and arms from the flames and heat. You will know when everything is adjusted properly because of the amount of air that will escape through the chimney. Smoke will still rise through the opening, but the heat should stay mainly in the house.
- Close the screen or door to the fireplace for safety after the flue has been adjusted properly. Any heat that has been let into the house will not escape into the flue after the screen or door has been closed on the fireplace. A fireplace is a wonderful thing to have in a home. Remember, the best way to be is safe. Always practice safety when dealing with a fireplace in a home or anywhere else.
