How to Build Audio Equipment Racks
Stereo equipment can cost up thousands of dollars, with various components combining for a premium sound. To store their equipment and create a complimentary image consumers look for, many people spend hundreds more on equipment racks. Building your own can save a lot of money.
- Design the look for the rack. Consider the number of shelves you want to use. Make sure the shelves are the proper width and height to accommodate your entire system. Allow proper ventilation to offset the heat the stereo system gives off when it is running.
- Measure the desired width and number of shelves to have the information you need to purchase the plywood. You also need to determine the height of the rack you are building. Take all of this information with you to the hardware store. Most hardware stores can pre-cut the wood for you if you have the right dimensions for your project.
- Use fine sandpaper for smoothing the plywood surface. Sand the shelves and material thoroughly.
- Apply stain and finish to the wood. If you are going for a natural look for the rack, this brings out the natural look of the wood.
- Create braces for the shelves. This can be done with wood braces, cut from plywood. If you are looking for an easier solution, you can purchase metal braces from the hardware store. Just make sure the braces are sufficient to support the weight of your stereo equipment, and that the weight is distributed evenly.
- Attach the braces into the shelves to connect to the vertical supports. Metal braces are screwed into the shelves with a Phillips screwdriver.
- Assemble the shelves, checking with a level to make sure they are properly aligned.
