How to Build Wooden Clocks From a Log
Making a wooden clock from a log is not a difficult process. It is also inexpensive, as you do not need many supplies. Once you are finished you have a custom made clock to hang on your wall. Each one made will be different giving you a one of kind item for your home.
Items needed:
- Log
- Saw to cut the log
- Clothes for dusting
- Sandpaper
- Varnish
- Paintbrush
- Clock kit
- Drill and bits
- Router bit (optional)
- Work gloves
- Goggles
- Glue
- battery
- Cut a slab from the log. The slab needs to be at least a couple of inches long. You can make the clock as thick as you wish; however, if you make it too think, you will have to hollow out the back section for the clock mechanism to fit inside, since it will not reach. Though this is more work, it often gives the clock a nicer more substantial look. Be sure to wear gloves and goggles when sawing.
- Sand your slab of wood until it is perfectly smooth. Using a sander will make this process easier.
- Mark the center of your clock. Drill a hole here in order to fit the clock mechanism here. If you made a thicker clock, hollow out a space in the back to fit the mechanism, in order to enable it to go through to the front. Using a router bit on the drill will make hollowing out the back easy.
- Determine where the numbers should be on the front of the clock. You want to have the numbers evenly spaced.
- Glue numbers to the face of the clock.
- Using a paintbrush and varnish, paint the entire front of the clock. Let the varnish dry and apply several more coats.
- Attach the hands to the front of the clock.
- Insert the battery in the back of the clock.
