How to Build Wooden Clocks

Homemade wooden clocks are a wonderful addition to nearly any living room. The traditional look and natural material add a sense of warmth and whimsy to the space while, of course, being functional. Though wooden clocks are readily available for purchase, making your own can give your living area a unique and personal design touch.

Items Needed:

  • 3/4" inch thick two-by-four plywood plank

  • Pencil

  • Clock mechanism

  • Black paint and small paintbrush

  • Skill saw

  • Sandpaper

  • Measuring tape

  • Drill

  • Minwax polyurethane

  • Wood stain

  • Rag

  • Picture frame hooks (at least a 25 pound weight)

  • Batteries (to use with clock mechanism)

Instructions:

  1. Draw a circle on the plywood with a pencil. The size will depend on how large you would like your wooden clock to be, but a good measurement for a standard sized clock would be about twelve inches in diameter.

  2. Cut out the circle pattern with the skill saw.

  3. Drill a small hole in the middle of the round piece of wood. This is where you will place the clock hands.

  4. Sand all the rough edges and surface of the clock with sandpaper. Make sure all the edges and the top of the circle are smooth.

  5. Use the rag to apply wood stain to the top of the circle, all around the edges and on the back.

  6. Let dry completely. Check the wood stain's manufacturer's directions to see an approximate time.

  7. Repeat steps five and six to apply a second coat.

  8. Apply a coat of polyurethane sealant and let dry.

  9. Repeat step nine to apply a second coat of sealant.

  10. Attach the picture hook to the back of the circle near the top.

  11. Install the clock mechanism. You will use the hole in the center as a guideline.

  12. Turn the clock over so you are facing the face of the clock. Install the clock hands and secure to the clock mechanism through the center hole.

  13. Paint the desired numbers in their appropriate positions on the clock face.

  14. Install the batteries.

  15. Hang your new wooden clock.
