How to Build a Modular Wine Rack
A modular wine rack is a design that allows you to easily change its capacity. This is a common requirement for wine racks because your storage requirements can change frequently. A modular wine rack must be made from some pieces that don't require nails or screws.
Items Needed:
- Tape measure Lumber
- Table saw
- Drill
- Dado bit
- Auger bits
- Obtain lumber with a thickness of 1 inch. This lumber should be suitable for furniture. Cherry wood is a good choice.
- Cut four 6-by-12-inch pieces of lumber with a table saw. Cut four 3-inch-by-4-foot pieces of lumber.
- Cut slots, or dados, in all 10 pieces of lumber with a dado bit on the table saw. Each piece will have four dados, one inch from each corner on the long edges of the lumber. The dados will be 3/4-inch wide and 3/4-inch deep.
- Attach a 4-inch auger bit to the drill, and cut five arcs into each of two 3-inch-by-4-foot lengths of lumber. The arcs should be along one of the long edges of the three pieces of lumber. They should be evenly spaced between the dados and have a depth of one inch.
- Attach a 1 1/2-inch auger bit to the drill and cut five arcs into the remaining two 3-inch-by-4-foot lengths of lumber. The arcs should be along one of the long edges of these three pieces of lumber. They should be evenly spaced between the dados with a depth of half an inch.
- Place two of the 6-by-12-inch pieces of lumber on their edges so they are four feet apart.
- Set one of the 3-inch-by-4-foot pieces of lumber with large arcs onto the 6-by-12-inch pieces so the dados of the three pieces fit together. Repeat this step to fit a 3-inch-by-4-foot piece with small arcs on top of the 6-by-12-inch pieces at the opposite end.
- Repeat steps six and seven to complete the second layer of the modular wine rack.
