How to Build a Non-Masonry Fireplace
A non-masonry fireplace is formed from clay. Most people use this type of heating when they have clay homes or buildings because the fireplace easily attaches to the building without any safety hazards. These style homes are in the southwest states.
Items Needed
- Metal handle
- Wheelbarrow
- Copper Tubing
- Sand
- Screen mesh
- Natural ornaments
- Brush
- Oil and wax
- Shovel
- Bucket
- Tarp
- Fire bricks
- Damper from wood stove
- Put two buckets of clay into the tarp. Walk on top of it while adding straw and water. Be sure to mix it well, this creates the mud or clay.
- Put the mixture on the base, which can be fire-brick, rock, or tile. Shape the fireplace using your hands. If desired add cooking racks or grills. Put copper tubing into the structure, this will distribute the heat evenly.
- Make a thick clay like lip in the front area to make up the log grill. Make about 5 holes to create a draft and attach a metal slider to control the air flow.
- To make the fireplace more efficient add an ash wall with copper tubing. This allows the heat to distribute around the fireplace and warm the home.
- Create a chimney at the top, back of the fireplace using the clay. Adding the damper will have the most impact at controlling the air flow.
- Seal all seams with wet clay, and once it dries seal it again with oil and wax. Doing this allows no extra air into the fireplace.
