How to Change Your Long Distance Service

There are a wide variety of long distance providers and plans available. If long distance charges seem too high, shop around for alternatives. Finding the right plan for each household’s individual needs often results in a big money savings on your telephone bill.

  1. Review your current plan. Determine the per minute fee for long distance calls. This information can be found on the latest telephone statement.

  2. Decide what features are needed. If you make frequent long distance calls at all hours of the day, a flat rate plan may be the best option. These plans allow unlimited long distance calling for a set monthly fee. If long distance calls are made infrequently, a per minute plan might be a better option.

  3. Research long distance providers on the Internet. A quick web search will bring up the main providers. Providers typically have their long distance plans available on the Internet on their website. Look for the plan that best fits your needs for the lowest cost.

  4. Call your telephone service provider and tell the customer service representative that you are unhappy with your current long distance rates. The telephone company may have partnerships with long distance providers, or plans of their own at better rates.

  5. Tell the customer service representative that you wish to switch long distance providers immediately, and tell the agent the company and plan you’d like to switch to. They may even offer to reduce your rate to keep your business.

  6. Check your telephone bill the next month to ensure the change has occurred.
