How to Change Your Long Distance Service

How to Cancel My Long Distance Service

Most people have cell phones with long distance services included at no extra cost. This eliminates the need for long distance services on a home phone line for most families.  Canceling your long distance phone services is easy to accomplish by calling the provider.

  1. Determine the long distance provider, noted on your telephone bill.

  2. Call the toll free phone number printed on your telephone bill, or found through a search engine. Have the paper bill handy because the account number printed on it will be needed when a customer service representative comes on the line.

  3. It is usually an automated system. Press the option to change or cancel services.  You may be asked to say or enter your account number or telephone number.

  4. When a customer service representative comes on the line, explain that you wish to cancel long distance services, effective immediately.

  5. Stay firm in the decision to cancel long distance options. The customer service representative will likely attempt to change your mind and may offer a discounted price.

  6. Simply state that the service is not needed and to please cancel it immediately.

  7. Write down a confirmation number for the request, the date and the name of the customer service representative.

  8. Check your telephone bill the next month to make sure the charges from the long distance provider have stopped. If charges are still occuring, call the provider again. Give the confirmation number from the prior call and ask that the charges be reversed.
