Voice over IP telephone systems is simply known as VoIP, so if you have seen these initials, you now understand what it stands for. In order for the phone service to work it relies solely on your broadband or high-speed Internet service. Therefore, you would not call your phone company for this VoIP unless your phone company provides your high-speed Internet service and actually does offer the VoIP. You can call your cable provider or even a VoIP company that is not related to your cable or DSL provider for service.

You will be supplied an adapter and the Internet cable plugs directly into the adapter and your telephone line is also plugged into the adapter. This forgoes the phone being plugged into the phone jack that the local telephone company installed in your residence or businesses in the past.

Cable connection to the Internet works a bit differently. They have a modem that everything runs through so that you can use wireless and not have to have your computer near the modem. The phone line is then plugged into the actual telephone outlet. Typically VoIP services have a monthly flat rate, which includes unlimited calling, voice mail, call forwarding, caller ID, and several other favorite features all thrown in for free.
