How to Clean a Water Filter
People love the taste of filtered water compared to the taste of tap water. The filtration systems use filters to clean the water but they need regular replacing to keep the water clean. This can get quite expensive, but an alternative is to clean and replace them.
Materials Needed
- Filter
- Gloves
- Buckets
- Mask
- Muriatic acid
- Garden hose with nozzle
- Plastic paint stirrer
- Remove the filter from the system. Use the manual that came with the systems if you are unsure how to remove the filter.
- Take everything you will need outside on the patio or porch. The area you work in will need to be well ventilated when working with the chemicals you will be using. Put on a mask and wear gloves during the cleaning process.
- Add ½ gallon of water to a bucket. Pour 2 cups of muriatic acid into the bucket. Make sure you add the acid slowly so it does not splash. Mix the solution with a plastic paint stick. Place the bucket to the side for now.
- Attach a nozzle to a garden hose and use it to thoroughly rinse the filter. Make sure both sides are rinsed well. This will remove any loose calcium or deposits for the filter.
- Place the filter in the bucket with the acid and water mixture. Allow the filter to soak for 5 complete days.
- Fill another bucket with ½ gallon of clean water. Pull the filter out of the acid and water mixture but make sure you have on gloves. Place the filter in the clean water and allow it to soak for 20 minutes.
- Take the filter out of the clean water. Use the garden hose to rinse the filter. Rinse both sides of the filter for at least 15 minutes. Replace the filter.
