How to Make a Desktop Photo Studio

How to Create a Photo Studio in Your Garage

A photography studio can lend professionalism to any photographer’s business. Renting studio space can be expensive. A functional photography studio can be created in a garage. Once the proper equipment is in place, the photographer can begin hosting professional photo shoots.

  • Clear out the clutter. Customers spend several hours in the photography studio. The space should exude professionalism and not be cluttered with stored holiday items and family memorabilia. If possible, store personal items off-site. If the items must stay in the garage, organize them on shelves against one wall. Cover the wall with a drape to hide the shelves.

  • Purchase backdrops and a backdrop support system. The backdrop support system is a stand that holds the backdrops in place. Pinning a backdrop to a wall can cause it to sag and appear droopy in the photo. Additionally, the backdrop support system can extend the life of the backdrop. Start with several classic backdrops such as white, gray and black.

  • Dedicate one area to a desk and computer. Clients want to see the photos immediately after the shoot. Have an area prepared where clients can review photos on the computer and choose a photo package.

  • Store props in the studio. An old milk crate, stuffed animals and antique chairs can be used to add ambiance and focus to a photo. Because a garage is a small space, hang props from the wall to increase floor area.

  • Add proper lighting. If the garage has windows, cover them with black cloth to prevent sunlight from interfering with the photo lights. Order several styles of lights and gels to complete the photo studio.
