How to Custom Paint a Ventless Fireplace
A ventless fireplace can be a wonderful addition to most any home. As these fireplaces don’t actually burn logs, they require much less maintenance than traditional wood burning fireplaces. Ventless fireplaces are also environmentally friendly because they do not emit smoke.
If you are on a budget, yet eager to install a ventless fireplace, consider a custom painting job to help you achieve a more aesthetically pleasing finished product. A few simple steps can help you get the desired result.
- Remove the fireplace from the hearth area. This will make it easier to work, as you will not have to worry about accidentally getting paint on the walls. If the fireplace cannot be removed from the hearth, ensure a liberal application of painters tape so that your next project is not painting the walls.
- Wash the fireplace thoroughly with everyday soap and water. Paint will only adhere properly to a clean surface.
- Allow the fireplace to air-dry. Do not use a cloth or towel so that you avoid the transference of small fabric particles onto the surface of the fireplace.
- Apply one coat of paint primer to the surface of your unit. As many ventless fireplaces are ceramic, it is particularly important to properly prime the surface to get the best finished result.
- Check the primer container’s instructions for drying time, and allow the appropriate amount of drying time.
- Select the desired paint color and sheen. As you will more than likely be painting a ceramic surface, enamel paint is recommended. If your ventless fireplace is other than ceramic, consult with a paint professional at your local retail store for the appropriate paint type.
- Check the paint container’s instructions for drying time, and allow the appropriate amount of drying time. Once the first coat of paint has dried completely, apply a second coat of paint.
- Check the paint container’s instructions for drying time, and allow the appropriate amount of drying time. Once the paint is completely dry, place your ventless fireplace back in the hearth. If the fireplace was not removed from the hearth, the painter’s tape can be removed from the wall.
