How to Decorate Home Window Coverings

Traditional home window coverings such as blinds or shades that are standard in homes are rather plain and boring. While they serve their purpose of covering the windows and providing privacy, they leave much to be desired when decorating a home. You can easily dress up these standard window treatments with a little time and effort.

  1. Choose curtain rods that show off your personality. There are many different types of custom curtain rods on the market that provide you with a way to decorate with window coverings that suit you style and taste.

  2. Add a valance, or sheer overlay, to the top of your window coverings. This will allow you to still see the curtain rod that you chose, and maintain the functionality of the standard window coverings you are using, such as blinds or shades.

  3. Decorate standard window shades with the accents of your choice. The sky is the limit when decorating you own shades. Use a hot glue gun or simple thread and needle to attach decorative elements to the shades that give it life and personality so that it becomes a great accent in the room. Ribbons, bows and beads are all great options for decorating standard window shades.

  4. Add curtains over your window coverings that give you the option to fully open and close the curtains. This way you can open the curtains to reveal the blinds or shades during the day time, and allow sunlight in when you would like. This will allow you to choose a style of curtain that matches the theme of the room in which you are using them, while still maintaining the functionality of the blinds or shades that you are using.
