How to Wash Window Coverings
Window coverings need to be cleaned ever so often. It is not hard to wash these coverings once you are sure of the correct procedure. It is, of course, best to refer to the manufacturer's instructions to do this task, but sometimes you have to figure it out for yourself.
- Read manufacturer's recommended cleaning method. When at all possible, it is extremely important to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions when washing a window covering. Various designs and materials may require special care during the process.
- Determine the material. If not instructions are available to you then you can figure out how to clean the window covering yourself. The method in which you should use to clean it depends on the material in which it is made. Is it fabric, plastic or another material type?
- Complete a test. Test the window covering with a cleaner appropriate for the material type. Place clean on a small place on the covering that would not be visible from the window. Make sure the cleaner does not damage or discolor the covering.
- Clean the window covering. It may be safe for some fabric window coverings to be washed in the washer. If you can determine the kind of fabric then you can research it to find out if it is safe. Other window covering types should be cleaned with the safe cleaner and brush. Be sure to pay close attention to stains.
- Dry completely. Thoroughly dry the window covering before placing it back on the window. Fabric covering may need to be ironed as well.
