How to Do Concrete Block Construction
Concrete blocks are commonly referred to as concrete masonry units, or CMUs for short. These are the concrete bricks that are typically used in a wide range of construction projects. Regardless of the project you are working on, the same basic method is used for most types of construction.
What You Will Need:
- Tape measure
- Stakes
- String
- Shovel
- Concrete
- Level
- Reinforcing steel bars
- Concrete blocks
- Cement mortar
- Measure the area you are working on and drive stakes into the ground to mark your perimeter. Tie string to each stake so that you are creating a connecting block, ensuring that the string is positioned approximately 8 inches from the ground.
- Dig a trench along the perimeter, ensuring that you dig 2 inches from the string on the outside of the perimeter and extend 10 inches inside the string. The trench must be 12 inches in depth.
- Mix the concrete according to the instructions provided on the package and pour the mixture into the trench so that you fill the space up by 8 inches. Level out the top of the concrete before moving onto the next step.
- Place reinforcing steel bars into the space on top of the concrete in order to provide the base with support. Bend the bars where necessary to fit around the corners, but make sure that all bars that are used are positioned in the center.
- Begin laying the concrete blocks for the first layer of your construction project. Apply cement mortar on the walls of each layer on both sides. Confirm that each layer is level before moving onto the next.
- Add concrete mortar to the top of the first layer and continue to build up until you have finished your project. Allow the wall to cure for seven days, while keeping it moist the entire time.
