How to Estimate the Cost of Upholstery Materials

Upholstery can be expensive if you are unsure what to do. Many different items are upholstered such as your vehicle and furniture. If you need to estimate the cost of upholstery materials make sure to get your measurements as close as possible.

Items Needed:

  • Tape measure

  • Fabric Store

  • Pencil & Paper

  1. Gather all of your materials in one place. Once you start measuring you are not going to want to look for other items for the project. Prepare to spend a little while working to get the most accurate measurements.

  2. Start measuring the object you would like to upholster. Measure the height of the object to make sure the upholstery will reach all the way to the floor. If there are cushions be sure to remove them prior to measuring.

  3. Measure the object in the front and back. Every measurement should be placed in a different spot on a piece of paper. Outline a list of parts you are measuring on the object. For example: A couch cushion is six inches long.

  4. Measure from one end of the object to the other. Make sure to write the measurements in inches. The closer your measurements are then the more accurate your estimate of cost will be.

  5. Look online for the type of upholstery you want to replace the existing with. There are multiple styles and colors to choose from when selecting the upholstery for a vehicle or furniture.

  6. Take the measurements into a store to have the cost estimated. The more upholstery you need, then the more expensive the estimate will be. Keep this in mind and look out for specials on upholstery. Be sure to check with a store that offers upholstry for various items and not just for furniture.
