How to Get Started in Snow Removal

Snow removal is a seasonal business that can net significant profits for entrepreneurs living in cold climate areas. Although it may sound as simple as having a shovel and warm clothing, there is more to it than that, particularly if you want to extend your service beyond basic residential snow removal. To get started, there are certain steps that you should take.

  1. Research area laws regarding snow removal to ensure that you are compliant and to avoid potentially expensive fines.

  2. Set up your business by obtaining your business license from the appropriate licensing agency in your area. If you are starting your snow removal business by yourself, starting as a sole proprietor may be a suitable choice. Other business options include partnerships, limited liability corportations or corporations.

  3. Secure insurance for your business. Because you'll be removing snow you'll want to protect yourself and your business from any potential injuries or accidents that may occur if someone falls or slips. In addition, make certain that your vehicles have the properly level and type of insurance for running a snow removal business.

  4. Research and purchase the type of equipment that you'll need to begin removing snow. This includes plows, spreaders, shovels and snow blowers. The exact type of equipment will depend on where you plan to do a majority of your snow removal business. For example, residential properties versus commercial properties.

  5. Get the correct vehicle for your business. In some environments an ATV, or all terrain vehicle may be suitable, while in others a 4x4 truck is necessary.

  6. Prepare a contract for your clients. This will ensure that there is no confusion regarding where you should or should not remove snow or how much is being charged.

  7. Advertise your business by passing out fliers, putting up a website, going door-to-door or placing a classified ad either online, in your local paper or both. The best form of advertisement, however, will be word of mouth from satisfied customers.
