How to Identify Skin Diseases

Skin diseases can be hard to diagnose and treat. Many people end up not getting a skin disease treated because they assume it's a simple rash. This can lead to more problems down the road. You don't have to be able to diagnose the skin condition on your own, but knowing when to seek treatment is always a good idea.

Skin diseases can be tricky to diagnose. Many diseases start out looking like a simple rash, and as a result people won't go seek treatment when it may be necessary. Understanding how to differentiate between an actual skin disease and a simple rash can become important.

Look for spreading rashes. If you have a rash that is spreading or is causing pain or severe itching, this could be a skin disease. Many skin diseases that start with a spreading or painful rash are caused from inflammatory conditions. Some of these conditions such as atopic dermatitis and eczema will fix themselves over a period of time. It's best to have these checked, especially if you start to see blistering or feel heat from the affected area.

Keep an eye on wounds. Even a simple cut or scrape can develop a bacterial infection. When bacteria is allowed to enter the body through a wound you'll often see the first signs near the actual cut. This can include swelling, pus and discoloration of the skin. If you notice any of these signs near an open wound seek medical treatment.

Watch for reoccurring sores or blisters. While most people think herpes will only affect genital regions the virus can present itself anywhere. There are several different strains of the herpes virus. If you notice cold sores that won't go away, blister clusters that heal and come back or have blisters that always seem present you should be checked out by a dermatologist.

Look at issues near your scalp, knees or elbows. Many skin diseases will affect these areas more than others. Psoriasis for instance can present itself on the scalp. When left untreated psoriasis can spread quickly. While there is no cure for psoriasis there are treatments that will lessen the discomfort and help prevent spreading. Anytime you see scaling skin and redness you want to have it checked to ensure it's not a fungal disease.
