How to Increase Humidity in a Wine Fridge

Wine in the fridge

The temperature of your refrigerator should not be too hot when you store wine, but you should also worry about what the humidity level is inside the fridge. You can check the humidity level using a hygrometer. If it is not at the right level, there are things you can do to raise the humidity level in the fridge.

Hygrometer

Supplies

  • Hygrometer
  • Water tray
  • Wet rag or sponge
  1. Purchase a hygrometer, which you can use to check the humidity level in your refrigerator. Some refrigerators have these built into them. If your refrigerator does not, you can purchase one at any home supply store, or you can purchase it online. Turn the hygrometer on and place it in the wine fridge. Wait approximately 24 hours before you check the humidity levels.
  2. Look at the reading on the hygrometer. If the reading shows the humidity level in the refrigerator is below 50 percent, you will need to raise it. You need some humidity to keep the cork in the wine bottle from drying out. If it dries out, oxygen gets into the wine bottle.

  3. Place a tray of water in the wine fridge and wait for 24 hours before you check the levels again. You can also soak a rag or a sponge in water, wring it out until it is only damp, and place it in the fridge.
  4. Keep doing this until the humidity level reads above 50 percent on the hygrometer. It may take some time because you should wait 24 hours after each time. It is important to keep doing this until you reach the correct humidity level in the wine refrigerator.
