How to Incubate Yogurt

Yogurt will incubate at a temperature between 85 degrees and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It will incubate slower at a lower temperature. If the temperature is too high, the yogurt will curdle. Keeping it at 100 degrees works best when incubating yogurt. You can incubate yogurt in different ways.

  1. Fill four quart jars with water at 100 degrees, and place the four jars in a chest cooler. Place the container of yogurt into the cooler making sure it does not touch the jars. Close the lid on the cooler.

  2. Make sure the cover on the yogurt container is closed tight. Wrap the container of yogurt with a thick wool blanket. Make sure the entire container is covered with the wool blanket.

  3. Use a heating bad and a cutting board. Place the heating pad on medium, and put it on the cutting board. Put the container of yogurt and cover it with some towels.

  4. Pour the yogurt into a large thermos, and close the lid tightly. When it is finished, loosen the lid on the thermos so the yogurt will cool, and then place it in the refrigerator.

  5. Incubate the yogurt in your oven. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and then turn it off. Place the yogurt container in the oven, and use an oven thermometer to keep the oven at around 100 degrees. You will need to turn the oven off and back on to keep the temperature at 100 degrees. Don’t worry if it goes a little under or over.
