  1. Decide on what type of fruit salad to make. Sometimes there is a special occasion where you would want to add different fruits.

  2. Purchase fresh fruits that are in season for the best and most cost efficient salad. If you do want to add some expensive fruit, a little bit can go a long way to adding color and taste.

  3. Find a fruit salad recipe to try. There are slight variations that can make your dessert spectacular.

  4. Go to the sure to purchase your items. Be very choosy with the fruit. You want ripened fruit but not overripe. Look for healthy looking outsides of the fruit because some skins such as peaches should be left on for their nutrients. The same is for grapes and berries. You do not want a salad that has brown spots.

  5. Pick up your desired yogurt. Most yogurt fruit salads are made with plain or vanilla flavored yogurt for the best mix. You can use low fat yogurt if desired.

  6. Cut your fruit pieces neatly. Trim skins and the pulpy layer from fruits such as oranges. Wash your fruit prior to cutting and drain well. Do not cut your fruit too far in advance of eating for the best presentation.

  7. Add a squeeze of lemon or other acidic juice to your salad. Save mushier fruits like melons or bananas and add last.

  8. Mix with your yogurt, top with chopped nuts and serve.

  9. Experiment with other recipes by adding honey or other flavors. You can layer for a fun presentation.
