How to Install Cement Board in a Shower

If you are installing tile in a shower, it is better to install cement board. The cement board provides a firm foundation for the tile to adhere to. It keeps the tile from shifting and falling. This type of board is ideal for the shower because it will not rot when it is exposed to the humidity and moisture in the shower.

1. Apply a vapor barrier to all of the studs in the shower. This will keep the studs from rot and water damage. You can use 4 or 6 millimeter sizes. Staple it to the studs and tape the edges with vinyl tape. The bottom of the vapor barrier should go in the front of the shower and over the tub flange.

2. Measure the shower from the floor to the ceiling.

3. Take measurements between the studs in the shower.

4. The sheets of cement board should fit between the studs and down the length of the shower.

5. Cut the cement board according to the measurements. Make a line on the cement board to show the length.

6. Score the cement board on the line and turn it over and score it again with a utility knife. Break the board along the lines.

7. Make a line across the cement board to show the distance between the studs. Use a utility knife to score one side and turn it over and score the other side. Break the cement board to the distances between the studs.

8. Use corrosion resistant screws to attach the cement board to the studs. Use a drill with the correct bit to assist you. Screws should go in the top, bottom and sides. Space them 6 inches apart.

9. Continue to follow this process until the shower is completely covered.

10. Use fiberglass tape to tape all of the corners and joints. Use trowel to apply thinset mortar over the fiberglass tape.

11. Apply silicone caulk between the gaps in the cement boards and around the pipes.
