How to Install Wood Retaining Walls

Wood retaining walls can add beauty to any hillside. They can accent a flower bed or prevent soil erosion from a hillside. Wood retaining walls are not only functional, but they add curb appeal to a home. It is important before beginning the project to plan it thoroughly. Here's how to get started:

Supplies

  • Metal rods

  • Rebar

  • Sledge hammer

  • Shovel

  • Drill

  • 4-by-4 inch lumber

  1. Decide where the wall will be located, and its shape and size.

  2. Purchase your lumber from your local home improvement store.

  3. Excavate the area where the wall will be built. Depending on the size, this can be done by hand, or with power equipment.

  4. Flatten the side of the hill as much as possible before beginning. The ground should be level.

  5. Drive rebar about eight to ten inches into the ground. Use the sledge hammer for this.  These will hold the wall in place and keep it from shifting. The rod should be positioned every four to six feet depending on the length of the 4-by-4 inch beams being used.

  6. Drill holes in the 4 x 4 where each piece of rebar is located.

  7. Drill each of the beams in this manner.

  8. Drill additional holes, to be used to insert rods which hold the wall together.

  9. Drop the first beam over the pieces of rebar.

  10. Place additional rods into the other holes.

  11. Lay the next 4-by-4 over these rods to hold in place.

  12. Continue this process until you have completely stacked a wall.

  13. When you've completed stacking your wall use the grinder to cut off any metal rods.

  14. Fill the area behind your new retaining wall with gravel.
