How to Make Mulled Wine Bags

Mulled wine contains spices and is typically made from red wine. It is made by slightly heating the wine and mixing the spices with the wine. A mulled wine bag contains the spices, which allow you to steep the spices in the wine without allowing the spice particles into the wine. Mulled wine bags are typically made of cheesecloth.

Things You'll Need:

  • Bowl

  • Cinnamon sticks

  • Whole cloves

  • Dried star anise

  • Dried cardamom pods

  • Coarsely grated nutmeg

  • Dried citrus peel

  • Whole peppercorns

  • Scissors

  • Cheesecloth

  • String

  • Wine

  • Saucepan

  • Sugar

  1. Mix the spices for your mulled wine in a bowl. Many recipes for mulled wine spices exist, although they typically consist primarily of cinnamon and cloves. Other common spices in mulled wine include anise, cardamom, nutmeg, dried citrus peels and peppercorns.

  2. Cut a 4-by-6-inch rectangle of cheesecloth with a sharp pair of scissors. Cut one of these rectangles for each mulled wine bag you plan to make.

  3. Place about 1 ounce of your spice mixture in the center of a cheesecloth rectangle. Gather the four corners of the rectangle together, and twist the cloth around several times to form a bag. Tie a length of string around the bag to keep it closed. Repeat this step to create as many mulled wine bags as needed.

  4. Place 3 cups of wine in a large saucepan. This will typically be an inexpensive, red table wine. Add 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water and a spice bag to the saucepan. Allow this mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes. Drink the mulled wine while it is still warm.
