How to Make Window Coverings And Valances

If you know how to use a sewing machine, you can make your own unique window coverings and valances. You do not need a pattern, unless you want to get into very fancy creations. All you need to get started for a simple window covering are the measurements, measuring tape, thread, and machine.

  1. Measure the window you are making the covering for. You need at least enough fabric for the width of your curtain rod plus three inches for hems and overlap of panels. You can add more to the width if you want them to appear fuller. You need enough length to cover the window from the curtain rod to the molding, plus an additional three inches to incorporate a pocket for a standard size curtain rod and the hem at the bottom.

  2. Measure, mark, and cut out this measurement from your fabric and cut it in half lengthwise. Finish all the raw edges with a zigzag stitch with matching thread. Fold over the sides of each panel, lengthwise, a half inch and sew them down with a single stitch. Try to keep it neat and even by using a width guide. You may measure and pin it in place before sewing if you like, but remove the pins as you sew.

  3. Create the pocket for the curtain rod by folding down the top of each panel one and a quarter inches. Sew it down, back to back, with a single stitch using a guide to keep it even.

  4. Make the hem at the bottom of the panels by folding the edge over a half inch and sewing it flat.

  5. Feed the panels onto the curtain rod. You can make tie-backs by cutting strips about four inches wide and the length of the width of the window. Zigzag raw edges and place the fabric face-to-face. Sew the sides together a half inch in from the edge. Turn right side out, fold the ends to the inside and finish it all around with a stitch a quarter inch in from the edges.
