How to Make a Flexible Ice Pack
Ice packs are always helpful to have on hand. Whether it is a sore muscle or just a hot day, an ice pack can offer immediate relief. While putting a few ice cubes in a bag can serve as an ice pack, you can improve upon this design by making your own reusable, flexible ice pack. With either alcohol or soap, you can create your own cold pack.
Making an ice pack with alcohol:
- Mix together three parts water with one part rubbing alcohol (also known as isopropyl alcohol). You can also use a strong drinking alcohol if you do not have any rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will prevent the mixture from freezing into a solid mass and will yield a pliable gel-like structure when frozen.
- Pour the mixture into a resealable freezer safe bag. Press out any air in the bag and seal.
- Put the bag in the freezer for at least an hour before you use your new ice pack.
- Take the bag out of the freezer when you are in need of an ice pack. Use the ice pack for periods of no longer than 20 minutes to prevent injury such as tissue damage or frostbite. If you wish, you can wrap the ice pack in a towel.
- Return the bag to the freezer when you are finished with the ice pack so it will be ready for future uses.
Making an ice pack with soap:
- Pour dish soap into a resealable freezer safe bag. Seal the bag, making sure to remove excess air.
- Place the bag in the freezer for at least an hour before use.
- Use the bag as directed above, and return to the freezer when you are done using it.
Note: To prevent leaks and spills, you can double bag the ice pack. Food sealer bags also work well as they are more durable and thicker, and can be heat sealed shut.
