How to Make a Riddling Wine Rack

A riddling wine rack allows you to clarify wine by storing the wine with the opening of the bottle slightly below the rest of the bottle. The sediment accumulates on top of the cork, allowing you to remove the sediment and reseal the bottle. The construction of a riddling wine rack is a simple project requiring basic carpentry skills.

Items Needed:

  • One-by-six lumber

  • Circular saw

  • One-by-three lumber

  • Pencil

  • Compass

  • Hammer

  • 1 1/2-inch nails

  • Hanging hooks

  1. Cut three pieces of one-by-six lumber to a length of 3 feet with a circular saw. Cut five pieces of one-by-three lumber to a length of 1 1/2 feet.

  2. Draw a line down the middle of a one-by-six piece of lumber with a pencil. Mark five points along this line at 6-inch intervals. Draw 2 1/2-inch circles centered on each of these points with a compass. Drill 2 1/2 holes through the lumber as indicated by these circles. Repeat this step for the other two one-by-six boards.

  3. Arrange the three pieces of one-by-six lumber side by side to form five rows of holes, with each row containing three holes.

  4. Place one of the one-by-three links of lumber across the top row of holes so that the one-by-three lumber covers the bottom half of the holes. Hammer the lumber into place with a 1 1/2-inch nail below each hole. Repeat this step with the remaining four pieces of one-by-three lumber, ensuring you stagger the nails in each board by one-fourth inch from the nails in the row above it.

  5. Attach heavy-duty hooks to the top corners of the riddling rack. These hooks should be rated for a minimum of 100 pounds.
