How to Use a Wine Rack as a Sprouter

Home gardeners can grow bean sprouts in small areas. Commercial sprouters are readily available, but you can save money by using an old wine rack as a sprouter. You can use each compartment in a wine rack to grow a different type of sprout.

Items Needed:

  • Wine rack

  • Tape measure

  • Wire mesh

  • Tub

  1. Obtain the right type of wine rack to use as a sprouter. It needs to be made of metal so it can withstand constant moisture and will typically be small. The compartments in the wine rack cannot have a bottom.

  2. Measure the height and width of the wine rack with a tape measure. Cut a section of wire mesh that is one inch longer and one inch wider than the wine rack.

  3. Place the wire mesh over the back of the wine rack so that you have half an inch of overlap on each side of the wine rack. Fasten the mesh to the wine rack with netting clips.

  4. Place a tub on the floor that is large enough to hold the wine rack. Place the wine rack in the tub.

  5. Place a different type of bean sprout in each compartment, and label the compartments. Bean sprouts generally require high humidity, and must be kept moist at all times. Water the bean sprouts by slowly pouring water down the front of each compartment. The water will run down the compartment and out the back of the wine rack where it will be collected by the tub.
