How to Make a Snow Roof Rake
Snow removal is a normal part of life in some areas. However, if you live somewhere with a large annual snowfall, not only must your driveway be cleared, but also your roof in order to prevent collapse. A snow rake is the tool for the job. They can be purchased, but if you want to save money you can easily build your own.
Supplies
- Piece of plywood or two-by-eight
- Block of wood
- Saw
- Handle or Telescoping pole
- Power drill
- Screw driver
- Screw and nut (optional)
- Construct the blade by cutting a one-foot wide by two-feet in length piece of plywood. A two-by-eight can also be used if you do not have plywood available.
- Attach a two-by-two-inch wooden block to the center of the blade with your power screwdriver. This serves as the mounting point for the handle.
- Select a pole to use as a handle with your new snow blade. Make the pole as long as possible if you don't want to climb onto the roof for the snow removal process. Long telescoping metal poles can be purchased as most hardware stores. They are more expensive than wood, but do provide a longer reach to the roof.
- Drill a hole through the center of the wood block on the blade. The hole should be large enough for the pole of the handle to fit snuggly into the opening. If the pole is loose in the hole, drill through the side of the block of wood and the pole and then insert a screw through the block and pole, put a nut on the end and tighten it to hold the pieces securely together.
