How to Make Your Own Snow Rake
Cleaning snow off roofs of homes and business is important for the upkeep of the structure. Homes can support light snow amounts, but after heavy snowfall it is necessary to use a snow rake to clear off some of the excess snow off your roof.
Items Needed:
- Blade material
- Pole
- Dowels
- Wood block
- Screws
- Drill
- Make a blade from a lightweight metal, such as aluminum. If you have an older snow shovel blade that can work. The blade should be roughly 1-foot wide and 24 inches in length.
- Create a pole or handle to the snow rake. The shortest the pole should be is 6 feet and the longest can be up to 15 feet. You can find suitable poles at most hardware stores. A good pole is made out of a strong lightweight piece of wood.
- Put the pole on the end of the blade. Be sure to center the pole in the middle of the blade so the rake is balanced. Secure the pole to the blade using screws and a drill.
- Put two triangle dowels, which act as supports on the back of the blade and pole. This makes the blade stronger. Using the drill, connect one end of the dowel to the blade and other end to the pole. The dowels need to form a triangle with the blade to make the snow rake sturdy.
Tips:
- When using the snow rake to clean off roofs, never stand directly under the roof. A large amount of snow could slide down at one time and bury you.
