How to Make a VGA Cable
A VGA cable is used on computers to transmit video signals. You can use VGA cables to link computers together to monitors, and is also used in computer games and other devices. If you are in need of a VGA cable, you can make your own with supplies you probably already have at home. It will only take you a few short steps to make a VGA cable.
- Purchase a short CAT5 cable to be used to make the VGA cable. Strip off the end of the cable so you can connect it to the device. Strip off approximately one inch of the insulation on the CAT5 cable to expose eight colored wires. Each wire will be a different color. Use a wire stripper to then strip 3mm of the insulation from the wires.
- Use a solder to solder the wires to the connectors on the VGA. You should use male connectors for this project. The end of the VGA cable that has pin contact is male, the other end that contains the socket is called female. Work very carefully as you solder this together. Take your time to ensure it is done correctly.
- Solder the wires for the other end of the cable in the same way. Each end must be soldered correctly so it can work with your device properly, and will be able to send the signal.
- Check each end and make sure all wires are secured and contained. You may need to edit your graphic card settings before your new VGA cable will work. With the wrong settings, it cannot transmit the image to your video card.
