How to Mount a Chimney Cap
A chimney cap is a vital part of any fireplace system. The cap prevents burning ash and tinder from escaping the chimney and starting fires. If you have a damaged cap you need to replace it immediately for safety reasons.
A chimney cap will help prevent deadly fires from burning ash that can escape your chimney. Replacing or installing these is simple enough for anyone to do in less than an hour.
What You'll Need:
- New chimney cap
- Drill with drill bit set
- Heat resistant silicone sealer
- Putty knife
- Set the new cap on the chimney. You want to line it up and drill a few pilot holes. Remove the cap and place it to the side.
- Apply the sealant to the inside of the new cap and the support frame on the chimney.
- Place the cap back over the chimney and secure it using the pilot holes you drilled.
- Remove any silicone that may have seeped around the edges with the putty knife.
For an Interior Cap
- An interior cap will need to be installed slightly differently.
- Use a broom to remove debris from the shaft. This is a messy job, so be sure you're prepared for that.
- Press the cap in to the shaft. It's going to be a tight fit and you'll need to work with it a bit to get the placement correct. The cap should be flush with the shaft all the way around.
- Use the sealant around the cap so that any place that touches the shaft is sealed. The sealant will need a full day to cure before you can use the chimney.
