How to Paint Over Concrete Stain

Painting over concrete stain is an intricate process, but a worthy task. Many do-it-yourself people desire to change the look of previously stained concrete. The hard surface makes it challenging, but it is not impossible to paint over concrete stained floors or other areas. Pre-painting procedures are important to succeed in painting over concrete stain.

1. Remove previous covering. Apply a trisodium phosphate (TSP) solution to the stained concrete with a mop. Use protective gloves when using TSP. Rinse the flooring or area after applying the solution. Let dry for one to two days.

2. Fix flaws. Repair any holes or imperfections in the floor or area, using a concrete patch. Allow the patched areas to dry before starting the painting process.

3. Attach a sealant. This step is optional. A concrete sealer should be applied if the area has leaks. Wait for the floor to dry before continuing.

4. Apply a primer. Put a paint primer over the area to be completed and let dry.

5. Paint the area. Select floor paint, if applicable, or one that can be used on concrete for the project. Use a paint roller or compressor to apply it to the concrete in thin layers. A brush may be needed to reach awkward areas. More than one coat may be needed to achieve the desired effect. Allow layers to dry before applying more paint.

6. Finish task. Apply one to two coats of sealant after all painted areas are fully dried.
