How to Paint a Fireplace Door
The doors on a fireplace can start to look worn after a period of time, which is mainly due to the high temperature produced by the fire. The doors of the fireplace can be taken off and painted to look as good as new.
- Take the doors off the fireplace and place them on a worktable outside.
- Remove any type of decorations that are attached to the doors.
- Remove any built up soot and ashes from the door by using a stiff brush.
- Dip an old towel in hot water to remove any remaining soot and ashes.
- Allow the doors to thoroughly dry.
- Use 120-grit sandpaper to remove any chipped paint or rust that has built up on the doors. It is recommended that you do this process while wearing rubber gloves.
- Smooth out the entire surface of the doors by using 220-grit sandpaper.
- Use a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust. This should be done on both the inside and the outside of the doors.
- Use newspaper to cover the glass in the door, any decorations that could not be removed, trim and the fireplace door gasket. This should be done to protect these areas from overspray.
- Use painter's tape to secure the newspaper.
- Apply the spray paint of your choice to the door using smooth even strokes. After painting the inside of the door allow it to dry before flipping it over and painting the outside.
- Allow the doors to completely dry.
- Remove painter's tape and newspaper and place the doors back on the fireplace.
