How to Prepare Rapid Set Mortar Mix
Rapid set mortar is a mixture of sand and fast-setting cement. It is typically used to repair concrete as well as plastering. Rapid set mortar mix is sold in powder form and must be mixed with water. Once applied, the rapid set mortar mix will set in as little as 15 minutes.
Supplies
- Rapid set mortar mix
- Five gallon bucket
- Thick mixing stick
- Power drill mixing bar
- Mortar tray
- Sheet plastic
- Protective gear for eyes, mouth and hands
- Cover the mixing area with plastic sheeting to make clean-up easier and to ensure the surface is protected from spills.
- Determine the amount of water needed to prepare the mortar mix by reading the instruction on the bag. Use the exact amount of water.
- Pour the water into the bucket.
- Put on the gloves, goggles and nose and mouth guard. It is important not to breathe the mortar powder when adding the mortar to water. This powder is an eye and lung irritant.
- Pour the correct amount mortar mix into the water. Stir with the stick until blended.
- Attach the mixing bar to the power drill. Mix the mortar thoroughly until there are no lumps. Remove the mixing bar from the power drill and place on the plastic sheeting.
- Pour the mortar mix in the tray. If any lumps or dry powdery areas are noticeable, the mortar needs to be mixed some more.
- Use the mortar as desired immediately.
- Clean the bucket, mixing bar and stick as soon as possible. Once the mortar hardens, these items will not be reusable.
- Additives can be purchased to lengthen the setting time.
