How to Program Satellite TV

If your satellite receiver is unplugged for any reason or the power goes out, it may reset and need to be programmed. You may be able to program the receiver yourself, or you may need to request a technician come to your home and program it, depending on your satellite service provider.

  1. Press the menu button on your satellite receiver. You can also use the remote to access the menu by pressing the "Menu" or "Info" button.

  2. Choose the "System Info" menu option. Write down the receiver model number and the satellite card number. If the smart card number is not listed on the system information page, you can check the top or bottom of the card to find it.

  3. Call your satellite service provider. Locate your satellite bill, and have your account number and information ready. You will have to verify your name, address and phone number to the operator before he can access your account. He may also ask for your Social Security number or an account pin number. If you do not have this information available, you will be asked to call back.

  4. Explain to the customer service operator that you would like to have your service activated and your receiver box programmed. The operator should be able to activate your receiver instantly. He may also be able to program your box or walk you through the programming process. Some satellite companies may prefer to send a technician to your home to activate and program the receiver instead of doing it over the phone.
