How to Refinish Self Storage Metal Doors
Self storage metal doors are exposed to different weather elements. Although this type of door is durable, the weather elements can make them peel and rust. Applying a few techniques can easily restore the doors and make them look good again.
Items Needed:
- Water
- Bucket
- Heavy duty cleanser
- Scrub brush with plastic bristles
- Garden hose
- Tarp
- Painter’s tape
- Galvanized metal etching primer
- Paint roller
- Acrylic enamel paint
- Add 1gallon water in a bucket. Add cleanser that is heavy duty. Follow the instructions on the package for the recommended amount of cleanser to add to the water.
- Clean the doors with the cleaning solution and a scrub brush with plastic bristles. Make sure all dirt is completely removed. Rinse the soap from the door with water from a garden hose. The soap should be completely removed.
- Allow the door to dry for five hours and then raise the door halfway. Spread a tarp under the door. Pull the door back down on top of the tarp.
- Cover any areas that you do not want to paint with painter’s tape. Press down on the tape to remove any bubbles.
- Remove the lid from the can of primer. Mix the primer with a painter’s stick. The best primer to use is a galvanized metal etching primer. Apply the primer over the metal door with a paint roller. Allow the primer to completely dry, which should take about four hours.
- Remove the lid from the can of acrylic enamel paint. Blend the paint with a painter’s stick. Apply the paint over the metal doors with a clean paint roller. Allow the door to completely dry for four hours. Open the door, remove the tarp and lower the door.
