How to Remove Snow With Bulk Salt

Snow on a sidewalk or driveway can lead to a very slippery and dangerous situation. It is best to remove the snow before it builds up too much. Melting the snow is the most effective way to permanently get rid of the problem. Bulk salt has been used for many years to melt snow after a blizzard.

What You'll Need:

  • Bulk salt

  • Shovel

  1. Plow away large deposits of snow with the shovel. Move the shoveled snow to an area that is free of pedestrian or automobile traffic. If there is a lot of snow, it may be necessary to rent a professional snowplow.

  2. Open the container of bulk salt. Using the shovel, scoop out copious amounts of the salt. Bulk salt is inexpensive, so large quantities can be used without breaking the bank.

  3. Sprinkle the salt directly on the snowy surface with the shovel. The salt will lower the melting point of the snow and ice, causing it to melt. The process takes a few hours to fully work on small areas, and the effectiveness also depends on the temperature outside. Add more salt if the snow does not melt after a couple of hours.

  4. Allow the melted snow to dry completely before using the sidewalk. Although the salt will provide some added traction, the moisture left behind can be very slippery. If the sidewalk must be used right away, mop up any excess water.

  5. Pour bulk salt on a sidewalk or roadway before a freeze. This will prevent snow and ice from sticking to the ground in the first place.
