How to Replace Fireplaces Inserts
If your chimney piping is not properly set up in your fireplace, it can prevent the fireplace from working properly. In order to repair the piping and get the fireplace working properly, you need to remove the old insert and install a new one with proper piping.
- Remove the old insert and clean the fireplace. Remove the wood and use a vacuum cleaner to remove any ashes that may be present in the fireplace.
- Place your hand up inside the flue and disconnect the chimney piping from the insert. If the fireplace is an older model, it may not have chimney piping attached to the insert.
- Use plastic or old fabric sheets to cover the floor from the fireplace to the door where you will be taking the insert outside. The insert will leave a trail of dirt, soot and ashes behind it. If the floor is not protected it could become damaged from these remnants.
- Pull the old insert out and carry it out the nearest door and dispose of it in the nearest dumpster or garbage can. The insert may be large, awkward and heavy so you may need to ask a friend or family member help you remove and carry it out of the house.
- Place the new insert into the fireplace. It may need to be screw or bolted into place. Find the chimney piping and attach it to the insert. The piping will also need to be bolted or screwed into the new insert.
