How to Separate Embroidery Floss
If you cross stitch, you know how cumbersome it is to separate embroidery floss, especially if there are different color shades or six strands. Since several strands come together and requires separation, you may end up spending several minutes trying to separate but with these simple steps the task is achievable in no time.
- Get the cardboard that came with the embroidery floss. Cut the cardboard into slits.
- Take your marker or pen and number the cardboard slits. Use the color numbers that came with the embroidery floss. This makes it easier to locate a specific color when you need it. You can choose to write your own color description, but it is much easier using what the manufacturer already have listed.
- Arrange similar colors together. Separate your color into categories. If you have a single embroidery floss of a particular color, start with that color and continue with those colors that have several color variations.
- Look at the other colors and choose those with fewer color shades after you finish separating those with one color and add to the embroidery slits.
- Add colors with the most variation last. Since, it will take more time to separate, and you may need to review the package to determine the correct shade.
- Replace the embroidery floss into the correct slots after each use. So, you do not have to go through this long process in the future, and always store the floss after you complete a project. This way they are always accessible when you need them.
- Separate six-strand embroidery floss into six individual strands. Cut the strand into the length you want. Take the one piece of the strand and pull it. Make sure the floss does not become tangled. Use your other hand to position your fingers when you pull the floss to ensure the strand won't bunch up.
