How to Set Quartz Desk Clocks

Quartz clocks keep time by using a quartz crystal.  This crystal vibrates when an electric current passes through it.  It regulates the clock's electronic oscillator to give accurate time readings.  Setting the quartz desk clock just takes a few minutes but some models are challenging to set.

  • Read the manufacturers instruction manual for the clock model.  Some clocks have complicated setting procedures.

  • Turn the quartz desk clock to locate the time setting button.  The button may be at the back or top of the clock, depending on the model.

  • Turn the minute hand clockwise to set the time.  Do this until both the hour hand and the minute hand show the correct time.  Do not turn the hour hand.  This process is used on some clock models.  For different clock models, you need to turn the knob in a clockwise direction until both hands show the correct time.  As soon as the second hand points to 12 o’clock, remove the battery.

  • Adjust the time setting button until the clock reads one minute before the correct time.  As soon as the minute passes and the correct time is reached, return the battery.

  • For a digital clock, all you need to do is press the time button until it flickers.  Using the other hand, press the hour button, then the minute button. Press them until each of them shows the right time. Once the correct time has been set, release the time button.

  • Set the alarm if you wish by turning on the alarm switch.  Hold down the alarm button while you use the other hand to set the hour and minutes and then let go of the button.
